What affects the cost

  • Number of balusters. Most stair remodels are priced around the baluster count, which depends on the number of steps and the length of any balcony or loft rail.
  • Baluster style and finish. Plain and hollow series cost less than solid, hammered, exclusive designs like Linéa, or specialty finishes like oil-rubbed copper.
  • Handrail and newels. Keeping a solid existing handrail saves money. Replacing rails and newels adds parts and labor, especially with many turns and fittings.
  • Treads and risers. Removing carpet and installing hardwood adds per-step cost. RetroFit caps can cost less than full replacement.
  • Staircase shape. Curved stairs, open (elevated) stringers and long balconies take more time than a straight knee-wall staircase.
  • Wood species and stain. Red oak is the most affordable. Species like walnut, white oak and Brazilian cherry cost more.

How to save on a stair remodel

  • Keep your existing handrail if it is solid and the right profile, and only swap balusters.
  • Choose a standard iron series and satin black finish.
  • Combine projects (treads plus balusters) in one visit so labor is shared.
  • Visit a showroom: seeing samples in person avoids costly changes later.

How much do hardwood stair treads cost?
Replacing carpet with hardwood treads typically runs $XXX – $XXX per step installed, depending on species, tread depth and whether you use full replacement or RetroFit caps.
